Here in Toronto, the most cosmopolitan city in the world according to the
UN, there are lots of stores run by people from east Asian countries that
sell bamboo of all diameters pretty cheap. If you can't find it just as
rods, you can disassemble various trinkets, such as those 'tiki torches'
(3-6' (1-2m) pieces of thick bamboo, sharpened at one end to drive into
the ground, and split at the other and lashed around a glass oil lamp).
While garden centers usually have the thinner rods, they seldom stock
anything over a few cm in diameter.
As for cork bark, despite the large Portuguese population in Toronto, it's
hard to find except in the form of winebottle corks, which are plentiful. :-)
