New Caledonia is an archipelago, and Rhacodactylus species certainly vary
from island to island. You could have had a different locality.
86, "The basic colors varies from brown to green, bearing a gray to whitish
lichen pattern. Some individuals show many white flecks in their neck and
tail base areas. Some animals bearing red patches have been collected from
northern New Caledonia."
Also, you said this was a young animal? What age was the one you had? You
could be seeing a difference in pattern between adults and juveniles.
Page 90, "Hatchlings measure 3.5-4.7 in. Their coloration differs from that
of adult geckoes: young R. chahoua show different pale and dark hues, but the
range consists exclusively of brown, gray, and black hues.

Do you know who had this animal? That could explain a lot too.
