Hello Hilde,
While I agree that the risks posed by horticultural vermiculite are
probably small, the poopooing that these sites do on the
dangers of vermiculite is to be expected as they are published by a
vermiculite mining company and a vermiculite trade organization.

A site published by the Schundler Company (see below)

"The Schundler Company is the oldest and largest producer of perlite
and vermiculite on the east coast of the United States"

The Vermiculite Association is an international organization composed
of companies and individuals working together to develop the
vermiculite industry in every part of the world.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran some great stories last year (I
think that they broke the story about the Libby mine). Here are some
stories they did:

"The vermiculite risk hits home: Local insulation remover worries
about a growing, deadly asbestos problem"
http://seattlep-i.nwsource.com/uncivilaction/asbe24.shtml

"Little risk for home gardeners, EPA says: But consumer groups say
avoid any hazard"
http://seattlep-i.nwsource.com/uncivilaction/cons23.shtml

"Asbestos found in many common garden products: EPA tests to determine
health risks"
http://seattlep-i.nwsource.com/national/gard31.shtml

A recent EPA update is here:
