Thanks for writing (privately as well as to the list) Jason,
You were the last of my friends known in the area - now I can only hope
friends weren't there unexpectedly.
I've no tangible idea what you've just been through, nor can I imagine just
how you'll be affected in the coming weeks. I cannot imagine...
So many variables which lie in a grey area; emotions, motivation,
perceptions, all that dictate how we'll be living our lives in response to
this event.
I simply must, however, say something about the generalization offered. I
know you know that I grew up in Europe then Asia before moving to the
country of my citizenship, the US. Exposure to such different ways of
living may have changed my perception from the mean in this country but one
thing remains the same, everyone has access to good judgment. To single out
the quality of being Muslim or Arabic as the obvious differentiator is not
correct and belies the intelligence in thought I know you possess. We did
not hate Christians or the US Army after the Oklahoma City bombing because
those two are familiar and we know the difference between a "way of life"
and individual actions. I implore you to consider that the words Muslim and
Terrorist are not synonymous. This is not a time to solidify resolve
against an entire race - we should be focused on the true perpetrators, a
VERY small group on the whole.
I am truly worried about the aftermath of this. Already there is news here
in Dallas and elsewhere that Mosque's are being shot, "Arabs" being beaten
(here locally the 7-11 clerk was Moroccan) all because time was not taken to
consider the difference.
Thanks again. I am truly relieved you are ok. I know you likely still feel
differently than I, emotions are what drive us at times like this. Feel
free to respond privately.
Jamie

I felt that I had to comment in this dabate as well.
First I'd like to say that I can understand the shock and anger that the
American people must feel, and that I give my sympathies to all of you who
have been affacted by this tragedy.
But I sincerely hope that this can be settled in peace and diplomacy, and
not end up as another American revenge operation, where the civilian
population gets to pay the price for what others have done. As we all know,
violence creates violence. But it is unlikely to think that Mr. Bush will
allow a peacefull soulution of these incident. Let's just hope that no more
blood will be shed, anywhere in our world.

Hello-
Forgive me Assar, but I wish for no diplomatic solutions. Muslim people have
spilled our blood, now you ask for a peaceful resolution?
I work at the NY Stock Exchange. Places I was standing in on Tuesday morning
do not exist today. Hundreds of fireman ran in to attack the fire minutes
before the second crash and first collapse. They are gone. Pulverized.
Yes violence begets violence. Every fiber of my being screams for blood, I
will give every ounce of my own, and even my son's, to make all those
responsible pay.
And to our foreign friends and foes- Realize that our government will not be
burdened by having to convince the US public that our war will be justified.
I just hope our President has the spine to finish the job. We certainly
won't
run out of missles. And if we do, we'll make more.
When the bombs start dropping, we will learn who our friends in Europe
really
are. I am curious to see.
This is a gecko list, and I will not speak of this on list again. If you
think I have overreacted, so be it. My house, more than 10 miles from ground
zero, sits right now, in a yellow acrid cloud of smoke. Am I breathing in
the
very essence of the thousands of dead?
Who can deny us vengence?
Jason
