Welcome to the marvelous world of geckos! There are geckos out there for everyone. Personally I have a bent for smooth-skinned critters. I heartily recommend Oedura castelnaui (Northern Velvet gecko) for its medium size (~6" from snout to tail tip), large eyes, and pleasant temperament...not skittish at all. They don't seem to be bothered too much by handling. They will stay with you! I have three Oedura castelnaui now, two males and a female...males are kept separate from each other, you know.
If you would send the length x width x heighth of your 1.5 foot tanks maybe someone on the list can better help.
