I've always had poor luck keeping superworms using
grain products as a substrate. I've been breeding them for years
using peat moss or coconut coir (similar to bed-a-beast). I have
virtually no mortality using these substrates.

A piece of dead wood is a good addition as well. Adding veggies
and dry foods like wheat germ and tropical fish flakes twice a week
will do. Carrots and other root vegetables will often last
until they're nearly all consumed if the substrate is kept moist.
The trick is not putting too much dry food in a once as it can mold if uneaten.
