The method of preparing skulls/skeletons really depends on the size of the skeleton.  Larger skulls usually do not require beetles.  The is a process of boiling and degreasing called maceration that is used.  Its very easy, but smelly.  However, to get quality small animal skeletons and skulls, the beetles are needed.  The dermestids are easy to cultivate, but unfortunately I do not have the capacity to do so in my small philly apartment.  I wait until I get a good number of specimens and then order the beetles so I can do them all at once.
