I have the ultimate system for my incubation and gecko substrates! I
went to the local Home Depot type store and purchased some plastic trash
cans with locking lids that are about 3/4 size of a regular trash cans.
>From their bulk materials sections I purchased gigantic bags of
vermiculite, perlite, orchid bark (med and fine grades), and spaghnum
peat moss. You save a huge amount of money by buying in bulk and the
stuff all keeps great!

I'm going to set up a can for fine red sand since East Bay Vivarium (in
Berkeley, CA), my local herp stuff supplier, has 50 lb bags of it. I
found if you keep the sand outside exposed to the elements in the
plastic bag it comes in, which is a type of plastic weave, that the bag
decomposes and you end up with a mess of sand with little plastic strips
in it your reptiles could ingest!

Keep looking for vermiculite, I understand some vermiculite has been
taken off the market because of its potential as bomb-making material.
There are still some brands that are ok though. Perhaps someone could
find out what brands and where to get? Right now that is hard to tell
because stores are possibly selling through their remaining stock and
you won't know until it is gone if they will carry the legal brands or
not.
