Greetings from a new member! My name is Kathy and I am relatively new to
the whole herp experience. We were given a juvenile bearded dragon about
six months ago and just bought two geckos. Our friend is a wealth of
general reptile info, but has never seen our pair - supposably Gehyra vorax.
Help! I need information to keep them happy!
Here's the setup and my (many) questions:
Lizards: pair of proven breeders sold as Gehyra vorax but look more like
this Gehyra Marginata (http://www.uroplatus.com/index_eng.htm) and almost
exactly like this Gehyra Baliola
(http://www.jcu.edu.au/school/tbiol/zoology/herp/png/ballio.jpg) . They
have light green-yellow eyes and a prominent skin fold on the hind leg.
What are they? Can some one tell me about the 3rd-4th toe difference in
slightly less scientific terms? (apical something, something) The female's
tall is narrow for the first cm and then widens and looks different - maybe
she lost it and this is regrowth?
Cage: 30g aquarium with hiding spots, H2O dish with pebbles, orchid bark
substrate, and daily mistings. Is this the best substrate? Do I need to
worry about mold growth? Any suggestions on keeping the humidity high
enough or info on automatic misters (if they exist)? And.... directions for
building a vertical(!) cage? I can tell they want to go UP.
Light: heat light during day (white) and night (red). Do these nocturnal
critters need UVB? They've been out under the light fairly often, including
the beardie's UVB light.
Food: large crickets and I would like to alternate with mealworms and wax
worms. I was also told fruit (berries, melon) mashed into a slurry. Are
they nectar drinkers? Any other fruit suggestions? They also get calcium
and vitamin supplement. What should their poop look like? Compared to the
Beardie, their poop looks MUCH drier and they do not eat anywhere near as
much.
Breeding/incubating: How?? Are the eggs adhesive? How do you move them?
Is cork a good addition to the tank for this?
Handling: I was fine with them in the store, but after the trip home (and
some wake up time in a dark box) they were a bit feistier. The male is
calmer, but even he will bite and do the crocodile death roll. Any
suggestions? If I want them to breed, I suppose I shouldn't be handling
them at all? Do their bites have an anti-coagulant component (mine bled
more than expected)?

Sorry about the long post and thanks for any help!
Kathy
