You should also watch out with what your alcohol is diluted with, some companies dilute it with acetone (to prevent people from drinking it) this will also damage your specimens. I have heard some researchers extracting DNA after the specimen has been preserved. I think it is preferred to take tissue samples before preservation. Anyone interested in preservation of there animals should definetly look for the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles guide for preservation. I think it's free (I could be wrong).
