Hello-
"Mealworm eats way out of Geckos stomach"
This is an old wives tale that pops up every now and then.
The fact that this petshop worker perpetuates the myth shows not only his lack of knowledge but the danger of purchasing animals or advice at pet stores.
Healthy geckos can easily eat mealworms. Sickly animals may have trouble digesting them. Healthy animals that eat too many in one sitting may regurgitate them or have some partially digested mealworms in their stool. (greedy porkers get what they deserve)
In my 8+ years of gecko keeping, I have heard this fable a thousand times, but not one of the tellers has ever said they witnessed this themselves. If this guy did indeed lose "a $200 gecko" it was because of some other sickness or accident.
Many leopard breeders feed mealworms exclusively. I prefer to feed my leos a varied diet of mealworms, crickets and waxworms. Laying females get extra waxworms as treats, along with an occasional pinky.
If you meet anyone who really believes this, put a mealworm in a small drop of water and watch it die almost immediately. How do you think it would fare after being chewed, swallowed and set in an acid bath?
Good luck with natoth- what ever that means:-)
