Hi Chris, I appreciate your comments re: necropsy and of course you are right. I may not have gotten a definite cause, but I did rule out a lot of things that could harm my current geckos, and that is useful and comforting. I'm in Canada, and my vet used a company call HISTOVET Surgical Pathology. We have a veterinary college in the province, but vets who know a lot about reptiles are still few and far between. I'm lucky to live 5 minutes from a herp specialist, but he is stumped too.
Your "100% conjecture" sounds logical. I guess as you say we'll never really know, but I can at least feel better knowing what it wasn't. The strange thing was that despite not having eaten for a total of more than three months, if I took a picture of her in her last days, you could swear she was in perfect health, fat tail, full body, clear eyes, gorgeous colors, ...until she tried to move. Sigh! Well, as Neil observed, it is a very rare thing, so maybe I won't ever have to see this again.
