[gecko]Use of Course Ground Walnut Shell Substrate

I am looking for a workable substrate for my leopard gecko.  The local pet store is touting crushed walnut shells.  They are the consistency of course sand.  Is this something that I can safely use?  Comments?   Thanks in advance! Mark
