I own 3 dogs, 2 cats, a 10 gallon freshwater aquarium, and i've had geckos.

my day gecko didn't like moving from the office to my house but we got her
to recover from that. although the day gecko moped and wouldn't eat when she
was totally moved. she recovered. so if the petstore was talking about the
gecko getting freaked out... sure... but none that i know of have ever
actually died from that.

my other gecko is living at my girlfriends house because unlike my husband,
she fell in love with the leopard while taking care of it. and my dogs do
occasionally peek in the glass to see what i am doing but they don't seem to
care about the gecko inside.

we of course keep the reptile and the fish up at a height on counters so
unless during cleaning you move the terrerium down to their level, they
really don't seem to notice it.

mice/ rabbits and t hings of that nature have a stronger scent so i imagine
owning those would lure really prey driven dogs to want to stalk them.
reptiles typically don't have as strong an odor or one that my dogs find
interesting enough.

i'd have to say in my experiences, unless the terrerium is down at the dogs
level and the dogs have a keen interest in multiple smells coming from your
terrerium and they manage to get in and grab the reptile by its tail and
sling it around... then the reptile is safe. Those circumstances are pretty
extreme though. And some dogs show less interest in hunting behaviors
anyhow. Many a person i know do have birds or bunnies and it gets along with
their dog.

My dogs run acreage and two of them are trained to work livestock. So I'd
think twice about bringing a warm blooded pet in to the house just because i
myself would have much effort in training a behavoir out of htem that i have
trained in to them for a good reason. But they don't care about fish or
reptiles. Maybe outside a few times they've batted at a frog. And the cocker
has been bitten inside his mouth by a small snake common in our area that
eats bugs. We saw the incident. He was sniffing it and it didn't take too
kindly to his nose and managed to catch him in his mouth. the dog was
devestated. i really don't think my personal dogs know what to do with
reptiles or fish. They go swimming in a "ford" close to our house and there
are fish in there. They don't seem to notice them either.
