YYYYMMDD has recently emerged as some sort of a standard for date stamps because it lexically sorts properly. When writing dates with slashes, I agree that it is best to include the month for exactly the reason you cite, but when I started using YYYYMMDD to mark snapshot releases for Icarus Verilog (and for day job releases too, for that matter) the fact that it was a date was really nobody's business.
