As far as I know, the sub-pixel rendering is only ever used for fonts. I do think any test patches to show the look and feel for cairo would also be wise to compare gschem's font rendering to (say) pango. This is as much a speed issue as aesthetic, as my profiling so far has shown its text rendering which is slowing component dragging down. (When zoomed in enough to see the text).
