I'm just thinking aloud, so apply salt where needed ;-)
In the GTK HID main window the layer selection and visibility control
are represented by a column of what appears to be radio buttons (with
empty labels) and toggle buttons (painted with the layer color).
Both types of buttons appear to have only one signal ("toggled")
attached to them.
Now if it were possible to add a second signal, let's say "clicked" and
test if this happens to be a "double click", we can start a dialog for a
transparancy factor [0.0 ... 1.0].
If we want eye-candy for this, we can even invoke some sort of "slider
knob" or "dial" dialog.
Look for src/hid/gtk/gui-top-window.c lines 1489 .. 1529 if I'm not
mistaken.
