I like the idea of the name being "just a string" because it means that you 
could, for instance, have a local symbol directory that contains symbols from 
the database (automatically populated when you place them), but which is only 
used to source symbols when for some reason the database isn't down.

Of course, there's no reason that the name couldn't have special significance 
to the backend, but I wouldn't like to enforce anything! [1]
