I really don't like grids that change the dots-per-grid on their own.
gschem used to do this, and it got (imho) fixed.

Switching between lines and dots is fine (in fact, I might do that for
the lesstif hid) but changing the grid *spacing* is not.  It confuses
the user.

Now, if your gui *always* drew, for example, a line every 5 grids and
dots (or tics) every grid, and then omitted the dots when the lines
were too close, and switched the 5-lines to 5-dots, that would be less
confusing, because the visual representation when you "skip" grid
marks is different.
