Well, it doesn't change unless the grid spacing or zoom changes, of
course.  I'm not sure wheter that counts as "on [its] own" to you.

And, of course, it's not clear my HID will ever make it into the main
tree at all, so it may be totally moot.  At this point I'm thinking of
this HID as being primarily for my own use, so "confusing the user" is
now very me-specific, regardless of other users.  It's entirely
possible I'll agree with you once I start using it for more than
testing.  And, in any case, it'd be easy to add a configuration switch
to control it.

Hmm.  That's a good idea.  Thanks for suggesting it.  (I still think
I'd want to switch to "all lines all the time" when the grid spacing in
pixels gets coarse enough...I'll have to try it out and see how it
feels.)
