Thanks for all the suggestions to this query.
I spent some time today looking at other graphical editing
programs and almost all of them operate the way gschem current works:
click on the object to select in all cases (including grouped composites).
Not sure what I'm going suggest next. I will however play with
the distance threshold and see if that makes things better.
