I didn't make a copy of the system-gschemrc file, but a previous installation did - and this was indeed the cause (good call!). This of course leads to the obvious question: How do I customize settings for the gschemrc file? If duplicating (some of) the initialization from system-gschemrc breaks things, what is the recommended approach? Is there any guidance regarding which keywords I can safely re-define in my local rc file?
On a related note, the checking of GEDADATA and GEDADATARC could be more robust. If GEDADATA is defined but empty, gschem won't start.
Thanks,
Joe

That doesn't sound/look good. Could you post a gschem.log file
that is created when you run gschem?

How did you install this? You don't by chance copy system-gschemrc
file to ~/.gEDA/gschemrc or a local gschemrc file?
