The right way to customize certain features is to just copy those
rc keywords into ~/.gEDA/gschemrc, not the whole file. Almost all of the
rc keywords can be copied and changed, however the following are
harder to override (but can be with care):
* hook helper functions
* keymapping definitions (unless you are careful)
* menu definitions (unless you are careful)

Those environment variables are set by libgeda during init.
If they are not set, then the world has ended and these two variables
are of no concern to anybody. :-)
