We use deletions to do those too. You can use negatives if there's nothing else on the layer, but as soon as you add a single regular trace, you have to use deletions. The 4pcb folks are GREAT. They worked with me pretty closely when I was working on the gerber exporter back when I fabbed my boards, and I've met some of them in person at a local trade show too. Now if only they'd start expanding their prototyping specials... ;-)
