I have figured out a few things:

geeqie --enable-gps builds with libchamplain 0.4

on starting, no way to show the map is apparent

reading the sources, one finds a pane config that if put in
~/.config/geeqie/geeqierc.xml causes a map pane to appear. Then it
basically works. search for 'pane_gps' in the sources to find it.

and then

libchamplain 0.10 defaults to gtk3 and just came out

so it seems that updating to 0.8 would be good.
