it is also a matter of resources. From my outsiders' POV it does not
look like geeqie has an abundance of manpower available. Concentrating
on maintaining a single codebase well might work best.

gtk-3 is not yet available everywhere, however e.g. Ubuntu has shipped
it for three releases afaict from
<https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0>. The next Debian
release should happen 2012 (or at least early 2013) and will ship GTK+
3.4.2.
