From my outsiders' POV it does not look like geeqie has an abundance of manpower available. Concentrating on maintaining a single codebase well might work best. gtk-3 is not yet available everywhere, however e.g. Ubuntu has shipped it for three releases afaict from <https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0>.
