Can you create a beta tarball, for testing packaging, and have a bigger gap between tagged bits and release? There's no reason to rush - it's been forever already, and putting up a beta tarball (created the same way the release tarball will be created) and having the list test it avoids problems in the distribution. All I'm suggesting is creating the distribution, perhaps even with the same name, and putting it up in a different place than where the distribution will be. If it's ok, it can be the release. If not we can iterate quickly.
