Pasar Minggu Church Forced to Close After Protests

Jakarta. The Pasar Minggu chapter of the Batak Karo Protestant Church has been
forced to close following a directive from the South Jakarta administration
under the request of local residents.

The West Tanjung subdistrict, Jagakarsa, church was served the notice by the
South Jakarta administration, which said local residents had protested the
church, Detik.com reported.

The church held a mass prayer in protest on Sunday morning (02/10), with dozens
of Public Order Agency officers safeguarding the scene.

The prayer was followed with a meeting between church management, local
officials and residents to settle the dispute.

South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi, who signed the letter Sept. 30, said the
church had been given a four month grace period in June to provide a building
permit, but failed to do so by the Monday deadline.

“Just wait (for the solution) on Monday,” said Mayor Tri to the reporters.

The letter which was signed by South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi on Sept. 30
also mentioned the church had been given four months period since June to
provide the building permit but it failed to do so until the deadline on
Monday.

Tri said the permit was one of several requirements under the inter-ministerial
decree on the establishment of houses of worship.

"In light of this and in order to maintain harmony and order between residents
in Tanjung Barat, the management of Batak Karo Protestant Church is advised to
stop activities in the area," the letter said.
