Vietnam's first Catholic university has opened, beginning its first academic
year with 23 students, ucanews.com reports.

The Catholic Institute of Vietnam, the first such body since the country was
reunified under communist rule in 1975, was inaugurated in Ho Chi Minh City on
September 14.

"The institute aims to enhance theological knowledge and competence among all
priests, religious and laypeople," Bishop Joseph Dinh Duc Dao, rector of the
institute, said at the opening ceremony. Theological understanding is very
necessary for Catholics to live a true life of faith in a fast changing
society," he added.
