Oxfam condemns growing inequalities An Oxfam report has found that a few individuals control as much wealth as the poorest half of the world's population. The NGO is urgently calling for a “more humane and sustainable economy". Antoine d’Abbundo January 17, 2017 The figure is dizzying: just eight people – all men – possess as much wealth as the poorest half of the population. This is the finding announced by the NGO Oxfam in its latest report (1) published the day before the opening of the Davos Forum (Switzerland), an annual gathering of the world’s economic and political leaders, which will continue to January 20. Last year, the organization for international solidarity calculated that 62 “super rich” people owned as much as the 3.5 billion poorest people. “Even at the top of the pyramid, wealth is becoming more and more concentrated," stated Manon Aubry, Oxfam’s advocacy officer for fiscal equity and inequality. “It is an offensive concentration when you consider that one person in ten lives on less than two euros per day."
