That reminded me that I have an Ubuntu 11.04 machine too, and gem5 works
fine on it with python 2.7.1.  I also just downloaded and compiled python
2.7.2 on my main machine which runs Ubuntu 10.04, and that works fine too.
 So it looks like it's not a general 2.7 incompatibility, it's just an
issue with just some specific installations.  (The one I was having before
was an internal AMD IT-maintained machine, running RHEL5 but with several
alternate Python versions installed.)
