Before you get your hopes up...no volunteering on my part. I'd be very happy if 
someone did manage to speed up the build though, with or without gmake involved.

Noooooooooooooo.  gmake is horrible.  We were originally gmake and
I've managed large projects that use gmake and it is absolutely
horrible.  Good luck getting dependencies right.  Good luck getting -j
to work correctly.

Now, if Andreas is volunteering to port to waf, I'd be all for that.
