Hi All,

Looking for feedback on this. About 1.5 years ago, I mentioned that we had
a patch that un-templated the o3 CPU. The result was no difference in
performance, cleaner code, and a slightly smaller gem5 binary.

Due to compilation issues brought about by other changes, it looks like we
might try to re-do the effort to un-template o3. Re-doing this is probably
a 1-2 day effort and would be immediately submitted to review board after
verifying the regressions passed.

When we should do this is another question. As this change alters almost
every line of o3, any patches currently in-flight by third parties would
have to be updated/re-done. So the question is, when is a good time to do
this? Are there many more invasive changes for o3 coming from AMD in the
short-term? Or is this a good time to go about this effort?

Basically looking for guidance on if this is a good time to go about this
change, or if there is another time in the near future when it would be
better to go about this effort.

Thanks.
