I think it depends on the particular implementation. Some editions use
4 VNs and some editions (includes current edition) uses 3 VNs.
I know that the MOESI Directory coherence protocol in the FeS2
simulator utilizes 4 VNs, and the FeS2 use the the same ruby module from
GEMS. But I don't know what is the exact edition of GEMS.
