The current point of failure in bleeding edge full system x86 is  
actually an init script that populates /dev, so there's a possibility  
there aren't beyond the absolute necessities. I've installed Gentoo  
many times on real machines and I've never had to make a device file  
by hand. If you do, though, you should look at the mknod command.
