Trying to find the requestlink table I was scanning through the SAM
directory. There are thousands of these little 0 byte pis.2845.pid files.
What are they?

That's caused by spiders following request links when some one actually 
makes a request.  If you go to the requestlist table you can view the IP 
address of the requester.  It generally will resolve to Google or other 
search engines.
