If you can group your data conveniently, the cheapest by far is CD-R or CD-RW.
600-700 megs a shot covers a good bit if you compress with a backup program,
or better make a big Zip file, a directory file uncompressed, and write both to
the CD.   I see no reason not to use CD-R, and just keep them until the data
is ready to discard.   A safe procedure would be make the backup CD, then
copy it and store one copy off-site.  You could probably arrange with a friend
to exchange backup storage at no cost.
