R/W CDs. Aren't some high capacity R/W CDs coming out
before Xmas?

Double Your Pleasure -- This could, I guess, be about
chewing gum. But in fact it's about a new recordable
CD standard from Sony, which promises to double the
amount of data we can record on new DD-R and DD-RW
disks.
Instead of a CD's 650 megabytes, the new "Double
Density CD-R and CD-RW" drives, prefixed with the
letters "DD" instead of "CD", will hold 1.3 gigabytes.
The drives, due in April, will cost $249. Write-once
disks will cost $1.99 each, and re-recordable disks
will sell for $2.99, according to the March 13 MSNBC
(http://www.msnbc.com/news/543972.asp). Of course,
existing CD drives will not be able to read these new
DD disks, whose tracks are closer together than a CD's
to pack in the additional data...
Will this seemingly valuable boost to rewritable
storage be the "right choice"? Pioneer recently
announced a $1,000 drive that will write both CDs and
4.7-gigabyte, $20 DVDs
(http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-4952541.html)!
And wouldn't that make for a fine backup medium. But
it's rarely a simple choice as new "standards"
emerge...
