With IMAP all mail information is stored on the server, very similar to the way that Exchange does it. (In fact, Exchange offers IMAP.) This is the similar to NNTP. Now, when you say the "header infor is on the local machine," you need to be aware that it is up to the client to cache the header information on the local disk. It's not part of NNTP or IMAP though. If the client wants it can simply grab the list of headers every time it connects to the IMAP or NNTP server.
