Thanks, Byron, for the information.
I've been using a bootable DOS 7 floppy to run the PC-Config program.
Will look for configuration programs for the Soundblaster card and for
the NIC. I can look through the CD that came with the sound card.
There is more to report. Despite not being able to use the floppy drive --
I replaced the one that didn't notice a change of diskettes with another
from the odd parts box, which doesn't seem to be working at all.
Decided that maybe the default partitions were a problem, since I
saw paging problems in the log file. Bootong to CD, I tried twice to
reinstall, doing a manual partition, once from graphical interface,
once by text. The graphical install hung during the formatting of the
partitions stage. The text mode got into formatting and spewed
some sort of dump on the screen for a few minutes until I killed it.
Thought maybe there could be bad blocks, so I repeated the GUI
install letting it do a bad blocks check, which took an hour or so.
Happened to be sitting in front of the screen when it died in formatting
the big /data partition, essentially what was left of the 30 GB drive
after defining /boot, /user, swap, and /. It is about 25GB. Wonder
if that is too big. Left the second drive, 14MB as a single /store
partition. All but swap I specified Linux native, and Disk Druid
seemed to know what to do with the swap partition.
There is something that flies by too fast to read early in the install
boot that may be some kind of error, but I have no idea how to
catch it. See that there should be a /tmp/install.log when the
install completes.
Will car pool to Baton Rouge this morning with my wife, who needs
to attend a staff meeting, and pick up a spare floppy cable or two
and maybe a used floppy drive or two. Will even check price on a
brand new one......
