Hmm.. Here's an interesting project for the members of Lafix and BRLUG.
How about setting up a database of noteworthy Linux-using projects in
your areas? I think projects such as Alaric's are particularly
interesting, being how it's used in education/research as an alternative
to wasting money on other operating systems. Maybe with mini-case
studies about each. I think this might be useful for newcomers to Linux
who ask how it's really being used.

That's good to hear! A recent article in the Linux Journal kinda
dis'ed the NVIDIA boards, claiming the makers needed "to get a clue
about open source" (not real clear on their gripes in the article) and
they recommended the Radeon cards (but this was in the context of
building the "Ultimate Linux Box"). Anywho, I just ordered a Dell 8200
tonight, and wll put Redhat on it for, among others, the purpose of
running "Blender". It comes with an NVIDIA, so I'm anxious to see the
    performance.

As a new member of this list, perhaps some sort of intro is in order.
(If not skip to the next para! :) ) My name is Ric Haag. I'm the
SysAdmin over at the Earth Scan Lab in Coastal Studies at LSU. It's an
operational ground station for receiving several satellite telemetries
in real-time. Although the capture machines are all Sun boxes, we use
Linux for most of the "user" seats. Anywho, I hope to find the time to
meaningfully participate in the LUG, though the lab keeps me
    hopping...

Back on blender, if you're into animation, and not aware of the
package, it's a very powerful 3d rendering, animation, and game
building package. Oh yeah, and it's free! If there's interest, I might
be talked into a demo at a future LUG meeting.

    Later all
