John, Gnome does not have to be running to run GAim. I run Window Maker and run all sorts of utilities from gnome without the slow window manager part.
P.S. If you haven't tried ROX for your file manager, try it out: rox.sourceforge.net. It is the coolest program I have ever seen. It is very small, fast, lightweight, etc. And it allows you to set up mime types or pinboards (desktops that you can switch on and off easily - to store files on your desktop) and you can make as many panels as you want. Personally I have two different pinboards that I switch back and forth to that have different files on the desktop. Rox-Filer was originally written for RISC OS - I guess that is why it is so fast. But my suggestion is to get a version of it now before they add so many features and like Enightenment, it becomes it's own bloated desktop. - But that doesn't look like it will happen for a while. :) >From: John Hebert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: Linux Tuning was Re: [brluglist] Meeting Topic >Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 14:38:46 -0800 (PST) > > >Good suggestion.
