There are no limits that I know of. The only limits
would be the number of partitions you could put on
your hard drive and the number of devices LILO or GRUB
can address. So, drive size/512b partitions = N, where
N is a big ass number. :)

The tradeoff here is ease of use: the tools Larry and
Jason mentioned cost $, but are probably easier to use
(don't know, haven't used 'em. Reviews?). LILO and
GRUB are free software (the source code is free too),
and probably require more head-scratching, but you
walk away with the satisfaction of knowing more than
you started with.
