does mandrake not have a feature like cvsup, where you can just download =
the upgrade, or the source code to compile it all locally? from what i =
know compiling source locally is supposed to work a lot better than =
using precompiled binaries... but then im not an expert either (read: =
still having to run windows)

  Subject: [brluglist] Mandrake 8.2 letdowns...

Got, installed, and configured Mandrake 8.2 tonight and I can't help =
being disappointed for the following reasons...

  1. The default install on my system took a while (approx 45 minutes) =
as compared to 8.0 which took considerably less.
  2. The install did not allow me the option of not installing the =
bootloader (perhaps because I chose recommended?)
  3. The install didn't allow me to set up x the way I wanted to... =
(maybe for the same reason)
  4. Booting up seemed much slower than usual. ( I use loadlin from a =
dos boot....fast)
  5. Upon booting my system and logging in for the first time, I was =
confronted by the "Mandrake First Time Wizard" which pretty much =
prevented K from loading properly (i.e. up popped an app that bugged me =
for personal information - my system did not respond at all to key-board =
input, so I was locked out)
  6. Getting into the second time worked; I discovered that the install =
program had misconfigured the audio (yamaha on-board) despite having =
detected and reported it correctly. (really no beg deal, I've never had =
this actually work...much less detect properly...)
  7. K would take an eternity to launch an app. (5 to 15 seconds...) =20

  The hardware I run is not ultra-fast or ultra slow ( I run a P3-450 =
w/128M) and it's performance was excellent with Mandrake 8.0 (I skipped =
8.1)

I'm going to try again tommorrow; if I remain vehemently unimpressed =
and bothered by it, I will go back to 8.0. (I usually run 2 or 3 =
different installs before I figure out what I want from the distro ... =
this was my first/second...)

Has anyone else experiemented with 8.2? =20

  Thanks

  Craig
