Ya...ya..ya brag on your fast machine.
I'm due for a faster one soon. I may have to check out that os-less one at
walmart.... If only I could sneak that past the XYL....

Anyway, I made another attempt and most everything worked right. For the
first 20 minutes of operation my HD was super busy: the machine idled around
20% utilitzation. I suspect the search daemon was doing it's initial run.
It finished, following that I got everything configured and played around
with it.

My initial observation stands: it's extremely slow to launch apps on the
desktop. Anyone know any tricks short of throwing more memory and hardware
at it?

compared to 8.0 which took considerably less.

It went pretty quick for me, I've got a Celeron 550 with 448 ram. Actually
it was faster than 8.0 or 8.1

>> 2. The install did not allow me the option of not installing the
bootloader (perhaps because I chose recommended?)

I've done both an expert (I usually choose this one) and a recommended
install, on the expert it will let you customize the bootloader all you
want.

>> 3. The install didn't allow me to set up x the way I wanted to... (maybe
for the same reason)

Right. =)

>> 4. Booting up seemed much slower than usual. ( I use loadlin from a dos
boot....fast)

Does yours load Aurora (the pretty start up) on startup? Mine is and this
version seems alot slower than previous versions.

>> 5. Upon booting my system and logging in for the first time, I was
confronted by the "Mandrake First Time Wizard" which pretty much prevented K
from loading properly (i.e. up popped an app that bugged me for personal
information - my system did not respond at all to key-board input, so I was
locked out)

The first time wizard would be pretty cool, *if* I was a first-timer. =) I
usually just select my desktop and then hit cancel. Sometimes I just go
ahead and make my .xinitrc and set it for my preferred desktop, but it seems
to not like it if you don't let that wizard choose one first, then manually
set it how you want it.

>> 6. Getting into the second time worked; I discovered that the install
program had misconfigured the audio (yamaha on-board) despite having
detected and reported it correctly. (really no beg deal, I've never had this
actually work...much less detect properly...)

Soundcards suck almost as much as modems. =)

>> 7. K would take an eternity to launch an app. (5 to 15 seconds...)
Doesn't it always? ;-)

>> Has anyone else experiemented with 8.2?

I've installed it twice I think. The only problem is that I've yet to get
the nvidia drivers to install right. Do they come installed by default? I
don't get the nvidia logo when I start X but some stuff seems accellerated.
I've always compiled them from source, but I think I will try the rpms this
time.

Jason
