Remember, Red Carpet (to my knowledge) only uses the RPM database. I have had a couple problems with Red Carpet myself, however it was only when it required major reworking of existing RPMs. Once, I had to do three layers of downgrade/upgrades. It took me about an hour to make all of the packages happy. This would have been a problem whether I was using red carpet or any other RPM package manager. My only point is that until Red Carpet uses another package manager (or even looks at stuff installed from source?) it will not get much better. Most importantly though, for 90% of the packages I try to install it works just fine. I do not know what you are using in KDE but I think that RPM needs to be replaced with something else.
