I don't think this conversation about local computer shops is really helpful
because none of the examples given of "bad faith" practice are that
convincing. I don't know all the details about the transactions that we're
all hearing about third-hand but you have to remember that there may be good
reasons for each example so far:
"Tell the customer to buy a new system" - OK so the old video card worked
... now let's see how well a 1Mb Speedstar 24x ISA video card works in my
new 800GHz AMD box. Pretty Crappy is my guess - and they'd probably have a
customer then telling everyone that the new system that they just bought
from "We-Fix-Computer" was a piece of junk that didn't work right until they
took it to "High-Price-Charlie" who put an new AGP 4x card in for $230!
"We sell customers 1GB disks" - I assume that the argument is that you can
get a much larger disk for only fractionally more money. Does anyone out
there remember buying a 125Mb disk and wondering what the hell you were
going to do with all the space? There are some old BIOSs out there that
will have problems with any disk over 504Mb - if you're trying to keep your
old PC running and need a new disk you may find that a nice new 40Gb disk
just plain will *not* work. Not everyone has the money to buy a new PC and
$60 isn't a bad price to keep "ol faithful" running.
"It's cheaper on the Internet" - Duh - most things are. In general the cost
of shipping and the cost of sales tax tend to make the difference less
apparent. I always recommend that people buy computers locally because of
the customer support issues - it may cost slightly more at the local shop
but when something breaks you don't spend hour on the phone trying to find
out if there's any intelligent life in tech support in the Dakotas.
And that my 10cents worth.

I heard some shifty statements coming from the back room of the computer
heaven in Hammond (which closed up shop btw) and I've stayed away from the
Baton Rouge store also ever since, seeing how they were both owned by the
same person. While purchasing my motherboard and looking around, I heard a
conversation in the back room. Someone's pc crashed for some reason unknown
to me and they brought it into computer heaven. Apparently the video card
was still very usable in fact and the younger tech guy thought that the
customer should know this. Well, the slightly older guy told the younger
guy to lie and just tell them that the whole computer was shot and they
could buy a new custom built one from them.
I've never had any problems with products I've bought from them, but I
don't think that what I heard said much for the integrity of the fellow that
was in charge that day.

I've been purchasing various pieces hardware atComputer Hardware in relation
to my work, and I'vealways found the service at Computer Heaven to
beexcellent and conducive to geekiness.Their prices may seem to be a little
high for someitems compared to on-line, but if you figure inshipping, it
comes out to about the same for mostitems. But the most valuable thing at
Computer Heaven is theamount of experience that everyone there has
aboutcomputer hardware and software. That service you can_rarely_ duplicate
at any on-line vendor. And if youdon't build your own boxes, they have a
very activegroup of hardware support guys building/fixing boxesat all times.
I assume the quality of their work isexcellent as well.John Hebert--- Bill
