Stereotyping? What exactly _do_ you call kids that
wanna appear as 1337 h4x075 but can't figure out for
themselves how to actually break into a computer, so
they download somebody else's script that does it for
them?

I never said the authors of root kits were stupid, or
lazy. Just the script kiddies themselves.

Very interesting reading and thanks for pointing it
out.

Agreed. You are correct, if someone wants to do
serious network security, they should be familiar with
popular root kits and guard against them. But my point
was that one should not start with locating and
running root kits. One should first know the basics of
networking and security.

Analogy: Do you give a kid a gun if they haven't
learned basic gun safety? Of course not. Root kits are
a similar threat.

Then I will have to defer to your experience, as I
have not been admining servers that get a lot of
traffic. But the responsibility just fell in my lap,
for get this, M$ Windoze servers... :P though I have
the go ahead to start integrating Linux into the NT
Network. Looks like I'm going to have to purchase
Dustin's book now.

Yup, absolutely.

Um, okay. Still not sure why you got your panties in a
wad over my previous message, but no offense meant to
you.
