I have been using xine 0.9.6 for a while. I do not find the sound to be choppy and it plays everything windows media player can play. If xine still allows you to use the windows codec files I would suggest you do this .... download ANGELPOTION video codecs and install them in windows. Then either redirect xine to look in that folder for codecs or copy them into some directory on your linux partition. I forget which folder the codecs in windows are stored but I can find it for you if you need it. I find this works like a champ. Infact sometimes xine can play files that are slightly corrupted (somehow?) that windows media player says it can't find a decompressor for.
