'ls' will not list a tape drive. If the tape is believed to be made by tar,
use:

    tar tvf /dev/tape

to produce a table index of the tape. Other tape archiving tools have similar
listing arguments. Dump, Bru, etc. all have a switch build this table list. The
mt commands only control the tape deck, the mt commands do not read data on to
and off of a tape.
